This is a devotion I wrote back in 2007, but I think it is a good reminder for right now with all that is going on with Covid-19. God’s Word promises us refuge in Him during rough, overwhelming times.
Psalm 57 Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed. (v.1)
This Scripture reminded of times when I was young, got scared, and hid. As a child, I was terrified of anybody wearing a costume. My mom recounts times when we went to Disney World and the characters would approach us. I would cry diving under her skirt to hide from the characters. I stayed under her skirt until the characters moved on. In the shadow of her skirt, I found my refuge.
This simplistic analogy paints a picture for me of finding refuge under the shadow of the Lord’s wings when I feel threatened. When I am frightened or overwhelmed by things in my life, I know that God will have mercy on me as I dive towards Him. God’s Word says: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will find refuge in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1).
Lord, help me to dwell in Your Presence where I will be sheltered in Your Shadow protected from the disasters of life. In You, I take refuge. Amen
